Wendover & Great Missenden Antenatal Course with Sophie
£320
Our popular, well rounded antenatal classes cover everything you need to know from pregnancy, to different types of birth experience and the postnatal period - including caring for and feeding your baby! Plus meet a group of friends all meeting their baby around the same time as you. Sophie is a midwife and founder of The Village Midwife and has been teaching parents across Buckinghamshire for 6 years now. Her courses are based in Wendover at The Village Midwife HQ (Tring Road, HP22 6PE) and in Great Missenden, at Great Missenden Memorial Hall.
Why choose our antenatal course in Bucks?
The course is 16 hours long which is all birth and postnatal prep. You have the option to book a discountedfirst aid course at The Village Midwife HQ as well but we often have medics/teachers do our courses who don’t want to do it again so it’s not a compulsory part of the course. On top of this, I know lots of other courses have far fewer hours than this spent on birth and postnatal prep but with my experience both as a midwife and a mum, I honestly wouldn't be able to reduce the time I spend on these topics any more without cutting out anything essential!
The antenatal course is made up of 5 sessions total, which includes:
2 sessions focusing on birth options in every eventuality, including:
what happens in different birth scenarios
pain relief options (pharmaceutical and holistic)
caesarean preferences
induction of labour
the birth partner's role in each scenario
an active birth workshop, including how to use a rebozo scarf and exercises to make pregnancy more comfortable
all about postnatal physical recovery and how to help yourself with this
Plus a visit from an experienced specialist women's health physiotherapist to discuss issues during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
An evening midweek Zoom session where we:
watch birth videos (both vaginal births and caesarean births) in a safe environment
discuss them - helping you visualise how you use the techniques we talk about on the course
The other 2 in-person sessions are all about the postnatal period with your baby. These include:
infant feeding (all methods including breastfeeding, expressing and bottle feeding)
common feeding issues that may come up,
baby care including nappies, bathing, dressing baby, burping baby, tummy time etc
all about the fourth trimester
how to write a postnatal plan to support yourselves
postnatal mental health for both parents
plus we have new parents in to discuss their recent experience of the postnatal period with their baby
I also teach about slings and carriers and how to use them safely once you have your baby and everyone practises with a stretchy sling!
One of the main differences between ours and other courses is the course length and the wide variety of the topics covered, but also it's taught by a midwife which some other antenatal courses locally aren’t. As well as online resources and videos we also have a thorough (and very visual) handout of information to take home which clients cover with notes during the sessions and often read through a few times before they have their baby. Our course is also a mixture of me chatting to you all, social time in the breaks, activities during each session on different topics and also discussion to suit lots of people’s different ways of learning. As I'm a midwife you get ongoing support by WhatsApp when needed and I can also pop round to help with feeding in the early weeks - plus we have a postnatal course which is really fantastic for new parents (and their babies!)
To book your place on the course you will need to pay £120 upfront with the balance due closer to the start of the course. You only need to book one place on the course whether you are single or in a couple - one place per pregnant person!
If you want to do a course with us in Buckinghamshire but this antenatal location is fully booked, don’t worry - you can also do a course in High Wycombe or book a 1:1 course with Sophie at your home. Send us an email at sophie@thevillagemidwife.co.uk for more information!
